Audacity – Free, Cross-Platform Sound Editor

Audacity is open source software for recording and editing sounds and it is free. Audacity works on Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and also other operating systems.

You can use Audacity to:

  • Record live audio.
  • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
  • Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.

  • Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.
  • Change the speed or pitch of a recording.

Latest release of Audacity is 1.3.5 (beta). It is recommended for advanced users only because don’t came with complete documentation. You can try stable release Audacity is version 1.2.6 which is complete and fully documented.

You can have Audacity 1.2.6 and 1.3.5 installed on the same machine.
