Thunderbird mail notifier (minimize to panel) for Ubuntu

By Detector | 22 November 2008

I use Thunderbird a lot, but running all the time minimized on my panel is really a mess with many open apps, so I always wanted a little Thunderbird notification icon on the panel notification section, so it will work in the background and notify me for every new mail a get. I found an easy way to do that for both Ubuntu and Windows (Windows users click here) operating systems and must say that I really enjoy in this excellent feature.

First you must download and install Thunderbird. For doing that you can follow this tutorial.

After installing and setting up your Thunderbird, follow this link to download (Mozilla New Mail Icon (Biff) and download XPI version for Thunderbird (.xpi)

Then from Thunderbird menu, go to Tools/Add On/Extension section, and drag and drop downloaded .xpi file inside the window. Click install and restart Thunderbird. To set up newly installed plugin, go again to Tools/Add On/Extension section and click preferences, so click on check boxes as is shown on picture.

The tiny Thunderbird icon will show up at notification panel area, so for minimizing and restore Thunderbird click on that icon. Also you will be notified when new message is arrived. That it’s.

Great, thank you. I am a user of both Windows and Ubuntu and I’ve been missing this small notification icon in Ubuntu.
