By Detector | 19 March 2009

IBM want to buy Sun Microsystems for $6.5 billion, according to Wall Street Journal. The takeover would boost IBM’s Internet, data storage, government and telecommunications businesses. Both companies preferent open-source and cross-platform technologies like Linux and Java and a possible acquisition will give better competitive base against Microsoft’s closed software and independence from Intel or other x86 hardware.

Sun has financial problems, posting a $209 million shortfall, and the company is hoping for a merger that would solve its financial problems. IBM may come in first place becouse IBM has a slight lead over close rival HP in the server market and would hold 42 percent market share if a deal with Sun was successful.

IBM and Sun doesn’t comment this rumors.
