Symbian has announced that the kernel of their popular Symbian OS will now be open source. Currently, Symbian OS is the most popular mobile operating system and is widely used by Nokia phones and other smart phones.

Since the foundation of the Symbian in July 2009, the Symbian OS has been in the process of becoming a full open source OS. Announcement that the kernel is now open source is one big step in that direction. Opening the kernel opens up a lot of potentially interesting possibilities for the Symbian platform. Now, the developers from all over the world will join their forces to bring more refine and more hardware supporting kernel and also new features and possibilities for new user interfaces, interesting application, new ideas to use phones and social media networks or just – connect to each other.
