WordPress 3.0 released

By Detector | 18 June 2010

WordPress released version 3.0 of their popular blogging platform. This released is nicknamed “Thelonious” and is the one of major releases of the software that contains over 2,700 changes — including 1,217 bug fixes – that were provided by 218 volunteers. You can run an update by clicking on the update link at the top of your blog dashboard, or you can download it and reinstall manually. But, before any update, check your plugins compatibility if you have plugins installed, with the new version of WordPress 3.0.

The biggest news is integration of WordPress MU with a WordPress, so now you can install and run one or millions of websites and blogs with one single WordPress installation. Also, the multi-blog capability erases “the final edge” that competing blog platform MovableType had over WordPress. MovableType has long offered the ability to run multiple blogs, though bloggers have shown a preference for WordPress, largely due to its easy interface.

WordPress announce the ability to build custom post types. Instead of every page being tagged as a blog post, it can be defined in terms that the user specifies. So each page could represent a product or service – for example, and have specific fields relating to that category, such as price and model. With all these announced features WordPress platform is moving toward Drupal and from now on, is a good candidate for managing an entire Web site’s content.

There are also a number of UI user interface updates. The admin has been redesigned: It’s more distraction free and easier to navigate with a more accessible layout and color scheme. Help is also added on every page. The new default theme is “Twenty Ten”, a theme to introduce all the new features in Thelonious. Twenty Ten can be easily customized with backgrounds and different headers directly from WordPress dashboard.
