Google 2011 roadmap will improve slow growth of Android Apps sales

By Detector | 27 January 2011

While Google’s Android mobile platform is experiencing considerable growth, the number of purchased Android Apps is in bad condition. In effort to improve sales and to make the platform more interested for developers, Google announce 2011 roadmap to revitalize the Android Market.

There are few announced directions:

  • Google will add support for in-app purchases, something that Apple did with iPhone apps about a year ago, where app users can make purchases within an app, in addition to paying for apps themselves. This has helped developers on Apple’s mobile platform to grow revenues by taking advantage of the exploding virtual goods mobile market.
  • Carrier billing improvements: Google launch AT&T carrier billing where users could directly pay apps with their phone bill instead using other payment systems. Next to do is expanding carrier billing.
  • Improve searching and ranking apps in Market: Google will continue to invest in the team that will check the apps for Android Terms and Services and will improve ranking algorithm to make it easier for users to discover the best apps in the Market.
  • Getting social: Google will make Android Market and apps more social
  • More HTML 5 Android apps

Despite recent changes in Google leadership, Android will continue to be strategic investment of the company.

I think it will may be slow going, but as long as Google does not abandon the project, Android should eventually become a powerful rival to Apple. There is a lot of opportunity out there, but I think this analysis of the app situation is correct, it leaves a lot to be desired right now. Its great to hear Google is taking an active role in addressing this.
